Neighboring Faiths: A Christian Introduction To World Religions

For all who want to understand the religious faiths of their neighbors and coworkers, Winfried Corduan offers an introduction to the religions of the world. His survey covers major and minor religions including Judaism, Islam, Zoroastrianism, African traditional religions, Native American religion, Hinduism, Buddhism, Jainism, Sikhism, Baha'i, Chinese popular religion, and Shinto and Japanese religions. Neighboring Faiths emphasizes not just formal religious teachings but also how each religion is practiced in daily life. Dozens of photographs, charts and maps help illustrate how the faiths are lived out in contemporary culture. Moving beyond mere description, Corduan offers specific suggestions for how Christians can avoid giving unnecessary offense to followers of these faiths while engaging them in constructive dialogue. This edition has been thoroughly revised and expanded, with a new chapter on Islam after 9/11 and additional material throughout.

This latest edition of Neighboring Faiths is a fully up-to-date (2012) version of the standard work on World Religions from an Evangelical Christian perspective. Though the author states his own viewpoint, he is nonetheless accurate, fair and respectful in dealing with other faiths. You will find discussions on all the major religions such as Judaism, Islam, Bahai, Buddhism, Hinduism, Jainism, Sikhism, Zoroastrianism, traditional religions (African & Native American), Chinese faiths (Taoism & Confucianism) and Japanese religions (e.g. Shinto). In addition, there is an excellent introduction dealing with the topic of religion in general. I have reviewed both the earlier work (1998) and this update, and I highly recommend the work as a resource for personal study and as a textbook for classroom purposes.-Michael J. Caba, Dean of Faculty, Kilns College

This book serves as a well written introduction to some of the worlds major religious movements. Not only does this book give an introduction but it does so from a verifiable anthropological position, i.e. that there is one God and at one time all people worshipped and/or were aware of this one God.

One of the best books on these subjects. Easy to read (at college level of course) and covers much in a few pages. Also offers an apologetic in addressing members of each religious group. This is a good book.

Great book for seeing what other religions belief, and how the religions came about. this is also a great book for Christians to read in order to gain knowledge of another religion, and have helpful tips on how to share the gospel with friends of another faith.

Great book, very informative on world religions and includes folk practices, so it doesn't just focus on religious tenets, but also on common practice. I would recommend to anyone and will use with my students when I teach a world religions class again.

I thought it was a good review of religions other than Christianity. For someone who was unfamiliar with how other religions came to be. it was a great starter book.

This book is very well written and contains a lot of information for the layperson who is interested in discovering more about additional faiths.

This work does a great job presenting the development of a religions in context within its historical sitting. Great read.
