Cleft Palate & Craniofacial Anomalies: Effects On Speech And Resonance (with Student Web Site Printed Access Card)

CLEFT PALATE & CRANIOFACIAL ANOMALIES: EFFECTS ON SPEECH AND RESONANCE 3E is the only book of its kind to cover both oral and facial anomalies, as well as cleft palate. Designed as a how-to guide for the practicing clinician, this book emphasizes what students need to know in the workplace to evaluate and treat individuals with speech disorders related to structural anomalies. Common craniofacial anomalies, associated anomalies, and genetic syndromes are also included. There is basic information on anatomy, physiology, and embryology of the face and oral cavity. The book covers how oral, dental, and ENT anomalies affect speech, resonance, and feeding. The evaluation section includes practical information on how to conduct a perceptual evaluation of speech and resonance and an intraoral examination. An overview chapter on instrumental procedures is provided for students, and chapters on how to perform and interpret these procedures is provided for clinicians. The treatment section includes surgical procedures and the use of prosthetic devices. Specific speech-therapy techniques are described for the treatment of speech errors associated with resonance disorders and velopharyngeal dysfunction. The need for multidisciplinary team assessment and treatment is also stressed. This book is easy to read to maximize learning. Many quality illustrative videos and video case studies are used to provide practical knowledge on how to evaluate and treat affected individuals.

I use this textbook in my graduate-level teaching at the University of Missouri and highly recommend it to other professors. Information is detailed, clearly presented, and cited appropriately. Complex information is summarized, current, and well organized. The Speech Therapy chapter has General Principles and specific therapy techniques that are "pure gold" for the treatment of speech disorders related to clefts and/or VPD. PowerPoints are provided for each chapter, which is a huge help for professors. "Cleft Notes" serve as a great teaching tool for students because they provide an opportunity for active learning. There are many handouts that can be printed and provide detailed, valuable information for patients and families. Case-Based learning, through over 240 short videos, is a brilliant teaching-tool for graduate students or practicing clinicians. Plus, chapters can be purchased independently for professional development. In summary, this edition is even better than the previous editions and has many new features that will greatly help professors, students, and practicing clinicians.Anne Bedwinek, PhD, CCC-SLPSpeech-Language PathologistSpecialist in Cleft Palate-Craniofacial DisordersGraduate Faculty, University of Missouri

This is an excellent text that raises the bar for communication disorders textbooks and accompanying materials. The writing style is transparent and easy to follow for both students and professionals. The information is comprehensive, including background/basics, evidence-based detail, and clinical tips. The supplemental materials are exactly what students and instructors need; thoughtfully organized "cleft notes;" PPT lectures with the right amount of information, quiz examples, and, for students, (not sure if available via or just via publisher?) the extensive video bank for clinical cases (face tapes, endoscopic and fluoroscopic exams, etc) is essential.

CLEFT PALATE & CRANIOFACIAL ANOMALIES: EFFECTS ON SPEECH AND RESONANCE 3E is an exceptional textbook. I've been teaching in the field for over three decades, and heartily endorse Dr. Kummer's stellar and comprehensive work. My graduate students greatly enjoyed the text, and lauded its long-term clinical utility. The accompanying materials are excellent. Ellen R. Cohn, PhD

Dr. Kummer delivers an exceptional, comprehensive resource for aspirating and master clinicians alike. She blends clinical science with practical tips reflective of her personal professional experience working directly with individuals with cleft palate and craniofacial anomalies. Ample photographs and illustrations are used effectively to guide understanding of anatomical variances and surgical interventions. The supplemental teaching resources including video case examples, "cleft notes", power point presentations and quizzes enhance learning and save significant time typically required for course preparation. Highly recommended!

As a clinician, Cleft Palate & Craniofacial Anomalies: Effects on Speech a Resonance is an excellent addition to one’s clinical toolbox. As cleft palate is no longer a required graduate level course for many communication disorder master’s programs, clinicians are often at a loss as to where to start. Dr. Kummer is dedicated to educating those professionals who come in contact with this population, both in her many seminars as well as this excellent reference book. The book is quite comprehensive, not only addressing speech issues, but also the underlying issues of genetics, anatomy, dental, orthodontic, prosthesis, surgery, feeding, and psychosocial. Pictures supporting descriptions of dental, genetic conditions as well as cleft types are helpful. The clinical will appreciate the online access to many videos demonstrating different articulation and resonance difficulties as well as speech therapy techniques. Whether the clinician uses this book as a guide to treatment or where to refer a child for further assessment, it is well worth adding this to your desk.

When you have a child with a cleft you always hope that after all the surgery and procedures ordeal your son endures for many years, that he will speak as close to normal as it is possible. Big concerns and anguish arise if the child struggles with resonance issues or VPI, and sounds nasal ,most of the time. Unfortunately, as parents we sometimes face untrained people who are at a loss about your son's VPI issues, especially in developing countries, and therefore your son's prognosis remains uncertain. Not all children, have the chance to be attended by such excellent professionals as Ms Kummer. But we do have her book. This amazingly comprenhensive book will clear the picture for you, even if you are a parent and not a professional, it will help you understand all you need to know about your child's cleft and resonance issues, from surgery to adequate speech therapy. And you will be really empowered to look for the the help your child needs.
