This is an excellent resource for the CLEP calculus test (the first I have ever taken). It provides focused facts and reviews that closely parallel the actual test material.I studied calculus on my own from a textbook, and used this book for review four days before the actual testing time. For the first practice test I got a D, the second a B, and on the actual CLEP exam I got a scaled score of 80, 100%. My honest opinion is that this book knows what its talking about, and has the information to get you a qualifying score. The CD application is organized as the CLEP exam is, which helps with orientation and reflexes. As I have not tried other CLEP calculus resources you may want to investigate those before making a final decision (the price is a little gnarly). However this book does all it needs to.

I learned calculus from this book. I've never taken a calculus class. I started trying to study for the CLEP test by using my brother's old calculus textbook. I was moving through that book really slowly (never made it past limits), and it was difficult to understand the language that the textbook used to describe things. I then picked up a book that a friend recommended that gave some good conceptual explanation of calculus operations, but I only ended up reading the first few chapters of the book.THEN, I picked up this book at Half-Price Bookstore, and it was fantastic! It did a great job explaining things and giving good practice problems. I got a 79 (out of 80) on the exam. The practice tests in this book seemed to me like they were a little harder than the actual CLEP test is (which I liked... it made the actual exam seem easy). There are explanations for the answers to the practice tests in back of the book, so you can see what you did wrong.Be sure to download the graphing calculator like they tell you to on the College Board website so that you'll know how to use it before you get to the exam. This book says that the exam will be taken on paper, but it's actually taken on a computer (you can use scratch paper). Also, the practice tests in the book are given in a single section (without the use of a calculator... all multiple choice questions) whereas the actual test will be in 2 sections (1 without the graphing calculator; 1 with it), and a few questions will have you enter a numerical answer instead of being multiple choice.

I bought this book for my son, he used it to review for the CLEP calculus test, and passed it with no problems at all. He liked the computer based tests, since the CLEP is given on computer it makes the practice tests more like the real CLEP. All of the practice tests are on the CDROM, that's not true for all of the CLEP books in this series.

I would not try to learn or teach calculus from scratch from this book. It's strictly a review guide. For that purpose, it's not bad; it's focused and the content seems to be accurate. However, I have the following suggestions for the publisher:1) Needs updated. The test now allows use of an included graphing calculator on part of the test. This is not reflected in the text or in the practice tests, which makes it hard to target my practice of manual and calculator techniques.2) The most important part of this book is the practice tests, but the CD that delivers them has a lot of room for improvement. It is really just the two printed practice tests with a timer and automatic scoring. If, after a test is taken, each problem's line in the test results detail screen were labeled with which section of the book it corresponds with, that would be a huge improvement! The summary could also be broken out by major topics. As it is, I had to manually tally up my right and wrong answers, by what topic I thought the question was, to figure out which topics I needed further study on based on my test results. Another improvement would be for the CD to include a program to generate random practice problems, because sometimes there just aren't enough problems in the book, but since you should be using another book with this one anyway, this isn't a huge problem. If anyone can knows of a CLEP Calc review guide that addresses these issues, I am open to suggestion.

Our son has successfully completed fourteen CLEP examinations for a total of 48 transferrable college credits. He has used the REA books in almost all cases supplemented by the DIVE curriculum for the advanced math and Biology tests. In all cases, he has found these resources to reasonably represent the information needed to successfully pass the CLEP exams, although additional study guides, and videos should be used whenever possible to ensure test success.CLEP ExamCollege AlgebraCollege PrecalculusCollege BiologyCollege CalculusIntroductory PsychologyIntroductory SociologyPrinciples of MacroeconomicsPrinciples of MicroeconomicsInfo Sys & Computer ScienceHuman Growth & DevelopmentCollege CompositionPrinciples of ManagementPrinciples of MarketingAnalyze & Interpreting Literature

This isn't a replacement for a course or complete textbook, but it does exactly what it's supposed to do by providing great example problems as well as a brief review to explain the mechanics behind a process or operation.I've got an old calculus textbook I use for school reference but I take this to my parent's house sometimes for a quick refresher on the basics.
