This second edition surveys the science of petroleum geology. It describes the generation, migration, and entrapment of oil and gas, and outlines the procedures used in their location, evaluation, and production. The topics, appropriate for the geology student (and cyber-cadet seeking abiogenic petroleum anywhere in the universe), include requisite basic material from the fields of petroleum engineering and geophysics. The eight colour plates are packed with useful information.Selley's writing style is most welcome.
This was my first introduction into the world of Petroleum Geology. I had already studied most geology in undergraduate, and used this book for an independent study in Petroleum Geology. Read it all the way through and to this day look back and realize how good of a foundation it was. Covers everything it needs to in a very readable format with good examples and illustrations.

It is a useful, well written and fairly complete introductory book to Petroleum Exploration but it is somewhat outdated; good anyway to have it on the shelf for a quick reference.
This book covers everything I needed to know in my last year of undergraduate geology. It even covers the finer parts such as the heavier hydrocarbons and how they originate to become the way they are today. Could not be happier with this book.
Excellent book, easy to read for petroleum engineers yet quite insightful and nicely presented. A great deal of references are useful to direct further reading, this book became my preferred reference in petroleum geology. An excellent overview of petroleum geology from exploration, including commentary on gravitational, magnetic ,3d ,4d seismic ,mri and borehole loging methodology ,to drilling on and off shore worldwide , to leasing ,reservoir estimation ,and development(reservoir enhancement methodology ).Extensive bibliography is provided .While this book can serve the, deeply interested ,novice it will also serve ,well, students and young proffesionals in the various specialty fields of the petroleum sciences and industry.
This book is an easy to read and offers a full coverage of topics in Petroleum Geology. I used and use it, amongst others, as a first reference to refresh my memory, before returning to work as an exploration geophysicist.
