Introduction To Global Health

Introduction to Global Health, Second Edition, is a comprehensive look at today’s most critical global health issues. Unlike other texts of its kind, this book emphasizes possible solutions to global health concerns rather than just focusing on the problems. The author examines the socioeconomic, biological, and environmental causes and consequences of disease. Topics covered include infectious diseases, nutrition, maternal health, non-communicable diseases (NCDs), mental health, and injuries. The chapters also explore global health metrics, ethics and human rights, policies, and practices The Second Edition is a thorough revision that offers expanded coverage of health across the lifespan, from childhood to young adulthood to aging (with additional coverage of NCDs, injuries, and mental health issues), as well as new coverage of health issues during humanitarian crises and health issues related to human rights. Key Features: • Emphasizes possible solutions to global health concerns rather than just focusing on the problems. • Discussion questions in each chapter help students to reflect on and apply the material from the chapter. • Student companion website offers additional activities to engage the students in learning. I teach a large undergraduate class in global health and this was the second textbook I have tried for the course. It is quite strong on infectious disease and epidemiology - but almost totally silent on noncommunicable disease, which is an unforgivable omission these days. Student recommendations were not very enthusiastic, so I switched this year to another book. I am considering returning to it next year, however, and supplementing it with my own selection of articles on NCDs. If a second edition is contemplated, please include the NCDs and road traffic accidents as well - major causes of morbidity and mortality in low and middle income countries.PS I was prompted to write this brief review by the totally LAME reviews posted by students - commenting before they had read the book, or worse, giving it one star because it had marks in it!! Hello - the author did not put those marks in there. Buy a new copy if you want a clean copy! Jeez. Let's be intelligent about these reviews.

This book has taught me so much about Global Health! It not only teaches me about important concepts, it gives understandable examples of how public health practices are currently being applied in the real world. Great read, I recommend it to anyone who is looking to expand their health literacy.

I purchased this book for an International Nutrition class, expecting it to be boring. Surprisingly, however, this book is both easy to read and interesting. There are, of course, lots of statistics, but also many interesting facts. I was both fascinated and horrified by the chapter about parasitic worms.

I find this book hard to get into but the information with the class assignments have found it interesting. Also learned that most salt here is bad for you because it does not have the iodine your body needs. Now reading the labels to make sure the salt I buy has what I need. Your thyroid need the Iodine for mental, and physical well-being.

I bought this book for a class. It is very readable, interesting, informative, clear, and to the point. It's well organized with headings, key terms in bold, interesting maps, graphs, diagrams, etc. I've often used it as a reference in my life outside of class as well. Definitely a good book for anyone interested in public health or international development.

I'm really not a fan of reading books reading is like mandatory until I bought this bookThe author opens every door of learning and understanding, once I started reading the book it keeps me wanting to finish it and so I did and I'm planning to buy more books. But there some topic she discuss and I want to clarify with her someday if there's a chance.

Of all my textbooks, this has been one of the most enjoyable to read. I really like that the chapters are short and to the point, giving me the basic information without all the unnecessary fluff I seem to find in so many other textbooks. My only problem was that sometimes the graphs were a little hard to read at first and lacked a key or index to help me understand what exactly I was looking at.Kindle version is excellent. I love the option to search and it really helped with online open-book quizzes for my class. However, the pages are not consistent with the paper copy of this book, which might be a problem for some people.

Currently reading this book for one of my family science courses on Global Health Issues and Policies and I love it! I find that this book is very information and provides a plethora of visual aids, such as graphs and charts, to reaffirm the facts and concepts.
